I'm a member of the Central Coast Chevy/GMC Truck club, from California, USA.

Not quite a year ago, I noticed a strange truck in the driweway next door. A shiny silver '66 fleetside shortbed with wide Weld wheels and low profile 60 series tires sat hunkered downon it's lowered suspenion. I thought it must belong to someone visiting since I had only seen a couple of econoboxes and an VW there before. Soon however I noticed my neighbor Kevin and a friend of his struggling under the hood. On my way to the mailbox, I thought to sneak a peek at the engine compartment. Disappointingly, a tired greasy old 350 was all that was loking back. But, there on top of the engine , was a shiny, new Edlebrock perforance carb. and manifold that they were installing. Hmm.., promising start, I thought "Nice Truck", I said as I headed on up the street. Several months passed before Kevin stopped by my garage and asked if I would be willing to help him with his truck. It seems that the previous ower in his zeal to lower his truck to it's mean looking stance had torched the front coil springs until the only suspension was the air in the tires, looked good ... but rode bad. Kevin, however had wisely purshed from Golden State Pickup Parts, a complete front end rebuilding kit, complete with new springs six-lug rotors for the new power disk brake system, and new spindles with a 2 1/2" drop, to lower the truck correctly. Now, the only thing our truck club members like more than working on thier own trucks is to help spend someone else's money helping them work on thier trucks. Of course, I said yes.., and on the appointed Saturday morning we began disassembling that which Chevy workers had bolted together thirty-two years ago. With several supervisorial types in attendance Kevin, split the ball joints and steering knuckles with a pickle fork allowing us to remove the A-arms from the truck. After about two weeks of cleaning, painting and fitting new grease boots and ball joints, we were ready to start reassembly. Two things that really impressed me about this job was first, the sturdiness of those old trucks and secondly, the quality and ease of working with the new parts in the kit. When we dropped the truck down onto it's wheels it looked better than before, and it actually went up and down when we jumped on the bumper which it refused to do before. Next, Kevin plans to add power steering, a new wiring loom, a new engine with all the right stuff, a new oak bed, and a new interior, maybe with a 60/40 power bench seat. I may never have to work on my truck again. Incidentally, at the last meeting of the Central Coast Chevy/GMC Trucks, Kevin became our NEWEST member.
